Diagon Alley: Week 2 - Blockout

Updated: 5.02.2023

Going into the 2nd week of creating my “Hocus Photos” shop on Diagon alley the goal is to outline it in Maya with basic shapes and then export it into Unreal Engine 5.01.

I started in Maya by importing a scale man, so that I can make sure the shop’s scale is realistic. I made two different shaders a grey phong and a black phong so that I can see what I was creating clearly. After that, I created a simple cube and scaled it according to my plot as the base for the shop. With the base done, I created 5 separate stairs from cubes and combined them to make a set that will be in front of my shop. Next, I decided to make the cylindrical windows on the ground floor. I started with the base under the window as a simple cylinder. After the base was done, I took another cylinder for the main glass part of the window. I used the cut tool along with the combination of holding the Ctrl button to make 4 even cuts at the top and bottom of this cylinder. After that, I selected and scaled forward the top 2 and bottom 2 edges of the cylinder in order to create a frame. The black frame for the windows is formed from cubes and cylinders. The door was made of a cube which was cut up and extruded to create the rectangular shapes and the frame in the center. The handle is a simple cylinder. The hanging sign is made from cubes and a black plain.

The façade above the windows was created from cubes and black plains with the help of basic extrusion and the cut tool. The part of the building with the smaller roof was cut up from the main building and extruded forward. I also used Bevel to create the smooth curve of the extruded part. The roof was made from a cube that was diagonally sliced. The big roof on top of the building is made from a simple cube with the top being scaled down. This roof was duplicated and scaled down to make the smallest roofs above the arched windows. The sphere protruding window above on the second floor was made from a sphere on which I made cuts with the cut tool in order to create and extrude a frame. The frame around the window is made from a torus. I duplicated the central window twice and scaled it down to make the two windows for the third floor above. The arched windows were made from a cube which was cut up and beveled in order to create the desired shape. The frames for these windows were cut from the base shape of the window and then extruded.

I don't claim any affiliation or endorsement with Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling, or any current or future copyright holders of the Harry Potter franchise. This project was simply inspired by the location of Diagon Alley within the Harry Potter universe.
